Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition. They translate complex, nutrition-based scientific findings into easily understood concepts to promote healthy lifestyles. By understanding the benefits and limitations of food, dietitians prevent and treat disorders, diseases, and conditions through reliable, evidence-based dietary advice and lifestyle changes.

Some of the conditions prevented and treated by Dietitians include:

  • Dysphagia (swallowing disorders)
  • Diabetes, heart disease,
    cancer, allergies, and obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Mental health disorders
  • Metabolic disorders

Dietitians work in a variety of roles throughout health care, research, education, public policy and business. In health care, Dietitians provide services in public or community health centers, medical clinics, hospitals, or in-home care. Some of the services provided by dietitians include:

  • Assessing clients’ nutritional and health needs
  • Promoting treating health conditions by providing dietary advice and lifestyle interventions 
  • Promoting disease prevention and public health through public policy, education and health programs
  • Performing research to increase knowledge and understanding of human diet and nutrition 
  • Providing nutrition, dietary and food safety advice in the food industry
  • Designing workplace health programs
  • Managing swallowing disorders by developing meal plans and by recommending nutritional supplements, assistive devices and feeding methods.
  • Developing health care plans and treating conditions collaboratively with other health care professionals.
  • Reducing treatment toxicity and increasing quality of life of those receiving cancer treatment.
  • Helping people prepare or recover from surgery. 
  • Monitoring children, businesses and communities for nutrition-related problems
  • Overseeing meals and diet of those in long-term hospital care and those receiving home care due to a disability or chronic illness 
  • Developing nutrition and meal plans for high-performance athletes
